Deep Cleaning & Scaling

Removes hardened tartar below the gum line. Most clinics require this before cosmetic work begins.

Deep Cleaning & Scaling

Tartar that has formed under the gum cannot be brushed away and keeps the gum inflamed. Deep cleaning — scaling and root planing — removes it from the root surfaces so the gum can reattach and stop bleeding. It is not optional groundwork; cosmetic work bonded to inflamed gums fails early and looks wrong.

How it's done

  1. 01

    Charting

Pocket depths are measured around each tooth to map where disease is active.

  2. 02

    Ultrasonic scaling

Deposits are broken up and flushed away above and below the gum line.

  3. 03

    Root planing

Root surfaces are smoothed by hand so bacteria have less to hold onto.

  4. 04

    Review

The gum is reassessed a few weeks later before any cosmetic work proceeds.

Who it suits

Bleeding gums, visible tartar, bad breath, or anyone about to have veneers or crowns fitted.

Where it falls short

Advanced gum disease with significant bone loss needs ongoing periodontal care, not a single deep clean.

Recovery

Sensitivity for several days and some gum tenderness. Gums may look slightly more recessed as swelling resolves — that is the inflammation leaving, not damage.
