Frenectomy
Releases a tight lip or tongue tie. A short procedure, often combined with other work.
The frenum is the small band of tissue connecting the lip or tongue to the gum. When it attaches too tightly or too low it can hold a gap open between the front teeth, pull on the gum margin, or restrict tongue movement and speech. Releasing it is quick.
How it's done
-
01
Assessment
The attachment is checked for its effect on the gum, the gap between the teeth, or tongue mobility.
-
02
Release
The band is released with a soft-tissue laser or scalpel under local anaesthetic. It takes about fifteen minutes.
-
03
Aftercare
Stretching exercises for a few weeks so the tissue does not reattach in the same position.
Who it suits
A persistent midline gap held open by the frenum, gum recession being pulled by a high attachment, or restricted tongue movement.
Where it falls short
Releasing the frenum does not close an existing gap by itself — orthodontics or bonding is still needed for that.
Recovery
Mild soreness for a few days. Normal eating almost immediately.
