Corrective Jaw Surgery
Orthognathic surgery for bite and alignment problems that braces alone cannot resolve.
Where the upper and lower jaws are mismatched in size or position, moving the teeth alone cannot fix the bite — the bones themselves have to be repositioned. Orthognathic surgery cuts and refixes the jaw in a planned position, usually alongside a period of orthodontics before and after.
How it's done
-
01
Joint planning
A surgeon and orthodontist plan together using CBCT and 3D simulation. This stage alone can take weeks.
-
02
Pre-surgical orthodontics
Braces align the teeth within each jaw first, often for several months, so they meet correctly once the jaws move.
-
03
Surgery
Performed under general anaesthetic in hospital. The jaw is cut, moved and fixed with titanium plates.
-
04
Recovery and refinement
Weeks of soft diet and follow-up, then final orthodontic detailing.
Who it suits
Significant skeletal discrepancies causing difficulty chewing, speech problems, sleep apnoea, or marked facial asymmetry.
Where it falls short
This is major surgery with a long commitment, and it is a poor fit for treatment abroad unless you can return for follow-up. We will say so if that is the case.
Recovery
The longest of anything here. Two to six weeks off normal activity, swelling for months, and a liquid then soft diet for six weeks.
