Fibre Post
Reinforces a root-canalled tooth from the inside before a crown is fitted.
A tooth that has had root canal treatment and lost most of its crown may not have enough structure left to hold a new one. A fibre post is cemented into the prepared root canal to anchor a build-up, giving the crown something to grip. Fibre flexes similarly to dentine, so it is less likely than a metal post to split the root.
How it's done
-
01
Canal preparation
Part of the root filling is removed to the planned depth, leaving a seal at the tip.
-
02
Post selection
A post is chosen to match the canal shape and cemented with resin.
-
03
Core build-up
Composite is built around the post to recreate a crown preparation.
-
04
Crown
The tooth is then prepared and crowned as normal.
Who it suits
Root-treated teeth with substantial loss of the natural crown.
Where it falls short
A post does not strengthen the tooth — it only retains the build-up. If too little root remains, extraction and an implant is more predictable.
Recovery
None beyond normal crown sensitivity.
